Do you still believe in God?

i'm a recent departee and am now re-evaluating all my previous beliefs and there's none more fundamental.

however, i'm not sure where to start: i'm sure i don't need to say there's an enormous amount of nonsense out there.

frankly, in spite of their other stupid teachings, i am considering reviewing again the articles in wt library as i think they do try to sincerely prove the existence of god.

Hmm, I've read it a few times (and underlined it--just like it's an enormous Watchtower study, LOL--and type up a precis for myself) but I don't recall Ray specifically covering this issue. Apart from anything else, his 'crisis' was only to do with the organisation: he remains convinced of his heavenly hope, which implies he's happy with his belief in God.

Some interesting thoughts here: I only realised when reading through them all, that I had limited my concept of 'God' to that described in the Bible (which is, of course, rather different from the God in WT literature!).

So if starting again from fundamentals, I think the question should have been, and should now be restated as: "Do you still believe in a form of divinity, or god-ness?" rather than the more Biblically-biased "Do you still believe in God?"

i have been df'd for about a year and also been going through a nasty divorce.

my ex has the kids and they're all jw's.

so my ex has been pumping into my childrens heads, that since i am df'd, they are to have no contact with me.

I feel like suing the elder body, for talking bad about me.

Puternut, congratulations, I hope things now start working out better for you.

Has anyone--disfellowshipped for apostasy--ever successfully sued, either the local elders or the Society, for defamation of character?

People: Why all the hoopla? The WTS is no longer an NGO with the UN. What purpose would it serve to send letters to the UN when they are no longer affiliated with that organization.

This is the purpose(s) it will serve:

because it's yet another example of WT hypocrisy, which, like every single similar instance, needs to be (1) identified, (2) documented and then (3) publicised,
because it will save the UN many hours of work if they can simply refer all inquirers to a web page,
because current JW's may stumble across it and, at the very least, may get them to start thinking.

lets sue the watchtower!!

i wonder if a person could get away with suing the watchtower for stressful thinking and loss of life.

because if you think about it, it's illegal to tell people what to do (slavery), but they claim that everyone has the right mind and that they aren't telling anyone what to do.

i wonder if you could get it suggested by the courts that wts tries to control through written language in the watchtower magazine or somethin, iono.

Could they be sued for breaches of human rights law?

E.g. the right to join and leave a religion: if you are 'punished' by shunning for saying you no longer believe in their religion, your right to leave that religion is being eroded.

What do you think?

Who is Ted Jaracz and why is he so disliked?

growedup... if you read Crisis of Conscience, you'll see that Jaracz was usually voting for the hard line (although he isn't a prominent figure in the book).

Apparently the reason is that he then wasn't an influential member of the GB.

However, in the backlash caused by the Ray Franz 'situation,' he gained a prominence his abilities never deserved and that he never had before.

Now, if anyone even thinks of trying to change things or be more compassionate, TJ quietly but menacingly says to them, "You're not trying to do a Ray, are you?"

Born Again?

Different christians will give different answers. As well, different christian groups have different views on what actual born again is.

So I seem to be finding!

There is a book 'varieties of spiritual experience' by william james, who, i have heard lists and discusses many, many of them.

The book can be freely downloaded from Project Gutenberg:

(Two other of his books are also available here, Meaning of Truth and Pragmatism.)

Marc Fonda's Notes on the book include the interesting statements:

"James has a skeptical attitude toward religious experience... James is utterly disdainful of organized religion."
